Are Travel Agencies Still Worth Using?
With booking sites, price-comparison apps, and endless travel blogs, it's fair to ask whether anyone still needs a travel agent. Travelers debate it all the time. There's an active Reddit discussion asking whether travel agencies are worth using, and the answers are mixed.
I'm Bruce Raber, founder of Lap of Luxury Travel in Apollo Beach, and here's my honest take: for some trips, you don't need us. For the trips that matter most, working with a luxury travel advisor can get you more value, better experiences, and real help when something goes wrong, at no extra cost to you.
When you probably don't need a travel advisor
If you're booking a quick, flexible trip, like a direct flight and a hotel for a weekend somewhere you know well, you can handle that yourself in twenty minutes. I'd rather tell you that than pretend every trip needs a professional.
When a luxury travel advisor really earns their keep
Luxury cruises. Lines like Regent Seven Seas, Viking, and AmaWaterways vary widely in what's included, which suites are worth the upgrade, and which itineraries suit your style. As advisors, we often have access to amenities and promotions that aren't available when you book on your own, and we know the ships well enough to steer you to the right cabin.
Europe and multi-stop journeys. Rome, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, Paris, the Greek islands: a trip like that involves flights, trains, private transfers, hotels, and guides that all have to line up. We plan the logistics so the pieces fit together, and we know which connections are too tight to risk.
Safaris and exotic escapes. An African safari or a Bora Bora overwater bungalow is a major investment. The difference between a good lodge and an unforgettable one, or between an overwater bungalow with privacy and one facing a walkway, is exactly the kind of insider knowledge an advisor brings.
Honeymoons and milestone trips. A honeymoon or anniversary trip is no time to gamble on a resort with misleading photos. We know which rooms have the view and which "ocean view" means a sliver of water past the parking lot.
Group travel.
Traveling with friends or family means coordinating flights, rooms, dinners, and excursions for everyone. That's where an advisor makes the biggest difference.
What our travelers say
Lisa Newman recently traveled with a group of friends from MiraBay. They began with two days in Rome, including private tours of the Colosseum and the Vatican, then sailed the Mediterranean aboard Legend of the Seas, with stops in Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Marseille, Palma de Mallorca, and Barcelona. As Lisa put it in her five-star Google review:
"Our group of MiraBay friends enjoyed every minute because Bruce handled all the details."
From flights and hotels to transfers and excursions, everything was arranged in advance, so the group could simply relax and enjoy the trip together.
What happens when things go wrong
This is the part people don't think about until they need it. When a flight is canceled, a storm changes plans, or a hotel loses your reservation, booking sites leave you on hold with a call center. Our clients get Platinum Trip Overwatch: we monitor your trip before, during, and after you travel, and we handle problems in real time, often before you even know about them.
"But isn't a travel agent more expensive?"
Not with us. Lap of Luxury Travel charges no planning fees. We're compensated by the cruise lines, resorts, and tour partners we work with, so you get personalized planning at no additional cost. In many cases, the amenities, upgrades, and credits we secure mean you come out ahead compared to booking yourself.
"Can't I just do my own research?"
You can, and many of our clients do plenty of it. Think of us as a second opinion from licensed, experienced advisors who have been there, have heard from hundreds of other travelers, and know the fine print. You still make every decision. We just make sure you're making it with better information.
How to choose the right travel advisor
Not all agents are equal. Look for someone who is licensed and insured, specializes in the kind of travel you want, is transparent about how they're paid, asks detailed questions about your travel style before recommending anything, and is reachable while you're actually traveling. If an agent pushes a package without understanding what you want, keep looking.
